Using LockDown Browser
During your time at Snow College, you may have faculty who use online proctoring for your exams. Most instructors will use Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor.
LockDown Browser & Monitor
Respondus LockDown Browser is a separate browser similar to Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. It will prevent you from accessing other websites while you are taking a quiz or exam. Respondus has created an introductory video Links to an external site. you might find helpful. You will need to install LockDown Browser onto your computer or add it as an extension to your Chrome browser if you are using a Chromebook.
Installing LockDown Browser
To download LockDown Browser onto your personal computer:
- Enter the course on Canvas
- Click on the exam or quiz that requires LockDown Browser
- Click on “Take the Quiz”
- You will be told that the quiz requires LockDown Browser
- Click “Download Respondus LockDown Browser

- If you are using a Chromebook, you must click this link instead of working through the Chrome web store.
- Click “Add to Chrome”.
- You should see a confirmation screen stating that the extension has been added successfully into your Chrome browser
- LockDown Browser will then download onto your desktop or as a Chrome extension, if you are using a Chromebook.
Taking a Test on LockDown Browser
Desktop Version
Close other apps and programs, especially PowerPoint, Word, and any
social media; the program will not work with some external programs
running- Click on the “LockDown Browser” icon found on your desktop
- Enter your Canvas login credentials (FirstName.LastName and password)
- Find the course in which you are taking the quiz
- Navigate to the quiz
- Take the quiz
- Submit the quiz
- Logout of LockDown Browser
Chromebook Version
- Close all apps
- Restart your Chrome browser
- Log into Canvas
- Navigate to the course
- Navigate to the quiz that requires LockDown Browser
- When you click “Take the quiz”, it should automatically launch the quiz, and the LockDown Browser extension
- Submit the quiz
- Navigate away from the quiz
Using Respondus Monitor
Your instructor may require the use of Respondus Monitor to complete the quiz or exam. Respondus Monitor requires a webcam and microphone to record you during a non-proctored exam.
Before you take the exam, you will need to complete the following steps:
- Review and agree to the Terms of Use
- Perform the Webcam Check that will confirm that your webcam and microphone are working properly
- Complete instructor selected settings
- Read any additional instructions provided by your instructor
- Read any guidelines and tips
- Take a student photo using your webcam
- Show your student ID
- Perform an Environment Check
- Complete the Facial Detection Check
- Complete the quiz as normal
