Meet the Instructor

Larry Smith

I'm Larry and I love physics and math. And I love students. And I love teaching. So, can you imagine how much I love teaching students physics and math? I have the greatest job in the world!

I grew up in Provo, attended both Provo High and Timpview High and then graduated from BYU with a double major in physics and math. For graduate school I went to The University of Texas at Austin for my masters degree in physics (minor in math) and a PhD in Science Education. I've been teaching at Snow College since 1991 and I love it here. I teach both physics and math, and I have also taught computer science, philosophy, various courses in the Honors Program (Links to an external site.), and clarinet lessons at Snow College. I have served as department chair (twice), dean, director of faculty development, and on the faculty senate. But my heart is in the classroom helping students learn and succeed.

I have a wonderful wife, Holly, and five great kids (four boys, one girl), all of whom attended Snow College. We live in Ephraim and I like walking or riding my bike to work. In my spare time I like to travel, read, garden, listen to science podcasts, and be with family and friends. I love learning and hope my enthusiasm rubs off on you too!

I'm excited for this class! I'm very grateful for students who want to learn.

I try hard to help students succeed and I'm not afraid of constructive feedback. Let me know if you can suggest better ways to teach portions of this class.

My research interests, although I don't have much time to pursue them, are:Larry Smith

  • How students learn
  • Significant figures (and better ways to track and report uncertainty)
  • Mathematical music theory
