Instructions for Homework on Paper

Online homework such as MasteringPhysics is pretty good at finding out if you can get the right answer (and even helping with hints along the way).  But It doesn't show me what strategy you use, nor does it give you practice in communicating your work to others.  Hence, I continue to assign a few end-of-chapter problems to be turned in on paper (in addition to the online homework).

The goals for the paper homework, then, are to show your thinking, approach, and strategy, and to communicate clearly with another reader.  Getting the right answer on paper homework is nice, but far less important than clear thoughts and clear communication.  Use the Model, Visualize, Solve, Assess strategy.  You will be graded largely on your strategy and presentation.

You are encouraged to study together in groups; your depth of understanding will correlate with how well you can explain concepts to others.  But what you write on your paper must be your own work.  Make sure you understand everything you write down.

Don't try to cram the solutions into a quarter of a page.  Use lots of paper and draw lots of diagrams.  Use the Model, Visualize, Solve, Assess strategy.  Make your solution a nice presentation.
