Handbook Guidance [for Instructors only]
Learning Across the Curriculum, 2nd ed.
What's New
This new edition of the handbook reflects three primary objectives: collaborator inclusivity, reflective of our student body; accessibility, in the form of easily malleable modules; and approachability, in both streamlined chapter/supplemental module content and an introduction to the Education Plan and Signature Assignment.
Inclusivity. We reviewed and reapproached our authorship ratio to be both more inclusive and more representative of our student body; as this program continues to develop, there are more opportunities to "be more inclusive, to broaden our students' experiences, and to amplify awareness of inequities Links to an external site." (Snow College Diversity & Inclusion Commitment.) For all collaborators, there is also the optional inclusion of their gender pronouns. If any collaborator wants to adjust this optional inclusion, please contact Michael Salitrynski.
Accessibility. Not counting this instruction module, there are 8 modules in total; each module comprises of a section theme, chapter essays, and supplemental content (additional videos/readings, discussion questions, and actionable steps). The Becoming an Academic: Information Literacy module and The Education Plan module both contain extra support resources.A list of total supplemental content contributors can be found in the Table of Contents, but total contribution spanned both editions of Learning Across the Curriculum. Building the supplemental module content this way also helped us with our third objective (approachability), as it helped us to make each chapter essay uniform.
One beautiful aspect of this new organizational system is that you can copy modules directly into your courses; from your own course, you can add resources, delete chapters, etc. It's entirely malleable and accessible. These changes allow the opportunity and invitation to take more ownership of the handbook.
Approachability. Two of our new module additions, The Education Plan and The Signature Assigment, will be useful tools in framing these required assignments for students.
The supplemental content can be used for assignments, in-class discussions, recommended resources, etc. Please note that although this handbook is focused on student resources, there are other resources on this Canvas for professors and instructors, including lesson plans, tips/tricks, etc.
