Quizzes
In Canvas, the term quiz is used for either quizzes or exams that are housed within Canvas. Canvas quizzes can be graded by the computer or be the instructor depending on the type of questions provided. This page will provide you with a general overview of the quiz summary page and the different types of questions. Some instructors will use New Quizzes. Quiz Summary
When you open a Quiz, you will be taken to the Quiz Summary and Instructions page. Here you will notice:
- The name of the quiz,
- The due date,
- The points possible,
- The number of questions in the quiz,
- The dates the quiz is available,
- The time limit, and
- The number of attempts you are allowed.
You will also find any instructions or general comments from the instructor. When you feel ready to take the quiz, click on "Take the Quiz".
Canvas has two settings for how questions appear: One at a time or all questions on the page. Some instructors might choose to only allow one question at a time while restricting your ability to go back to previous questions.
Quiz Question Types
There are several different types of questions Links to an external site. that your instructor can use:
- Multiple Choice Questions - Select one answer from the possible answers listed. There is a circle (radio button) next to each possible answer
- True/False Questions - Select one answer from the possible true or false listed.
- Fill-in-the-Blank Questions - Type your answer into the box below the question. Your instructor will tell Canvas the acceptable answer, so be aware of your spelling.
- Fill-in-Multiple-Blanks Questions - Provides a blank or blanks in the question text. Enter your answer in each of the boxes. Again, your instructor will tell Canvas what is acceptable, so be aware of your spelling.
- Multiple Answer Questions - Select more than one answer from the possible answers listed. There is a check box next to each possible answer.
- Multiple Dropdowns Questions - Click on the dropdown menu and select your answer from the possible answers listed. There might be more than one dropdown menu in a question, so make sure that you have answered all of the parts of the question.
- Matching Questions - Match the right-side dropdown menu with the left-side prompt. Make sure that you have matched all of the options.
- Numerical Answer Questions - Type a number in the text box below the question. Numerical Answer Questions only accept numbers with no units.
- Formula Questions - These are similar to the Numerical Answer Questions where you will type your numerical answer into the text box below the question.
- Essay Questions - Click in the text box and type your answer in the Rich Content Editor. You can format your response. If you need the LaTex equation editor, click on the square root at the top of the Rich Content Editor.
- File Upload Questions - Click on the "Choose a File" button. Canvas will open a dialogue box where you can choose the file you wish to upload. You can remove the file by clicking on the "X" to the right of the file name.
The Sidebar of the quiz contains a list of questions. If the question has a checkmark, you have answered that question. Unanswered questions are bolded and identified by a question mark. If you want to return to a question, you can flag the question by clicking the flag by the question number in the quiz and not the sidebar.
