Technology Expectations
Computer
To be an online learner, you do not need to have a certain computer or system. However, having regular access to a computer that connects to the internet will be essential to your success as an online student. Typically having a recent (5 years or newer) computer will help you to avoid streaming delays and software issues. You want to have a reliable computer so that you can view any material and submit any assignments in a timely manner.
You do not have to buy a computer to be a successful online student. You will find that you can access computers in a variety of places. Snow College has computer labs at both the Ephraim and Richfield campuses. You could use the computer stations at a local library. You can also use a device like a phone or a tablet to do some of your online work. Canvas has a student app for both Android and IOS phones that has similar functionality to the web version. However, you might find that some of the functionality is missing. It is recommended that you use the internet and a web browser for full functionality. You will want a computer for longer written assignments assignments and quizzes.
You might also find that a microphone, headphones, and camera helpful.
Updated Operating System
Having an updated operating system will help you run programs correctly and be able to view the material you need. Updated systems also provide more protection from potential virus and malware. It is recommended that you have at least Windows 7 or higher or Mac OSC 10.6 or newer. If you have questions about your operating system, contact the help desk at 435-283-7777.
Basic Software
As an online student, you will need some basic software to complete the courses. Some recommended software:
- Microsoft Office Suite Links to an external site. (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) or some other word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (like OpenOffice or Mac Pages);
- Internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, Duck Duck Go);
- Canvas works best on Chrome or Firefox
- A PDF reader, such as Adobe Acrobat Links to an external site. or FoxIt Reader Links to an external site.
- You might be required to download LockDown Browser Links to an external site. for quizzes and exams.
Internet
Connecting to the internet instead of using a data plan will help you to be able to watch videos and download course content. Although Canvas will work at lower speeds (anything above 512 kbps), it is recommended that you have 3 Mbps or more. If you are finding that your videos are not loading or files are not downloading, it is recommended that you ask others to not stream during that time or go to a place with a stronger connection or bandwidth.
Screen Reader (if needed)
If you need a screen reader, it is recommended that you use VoiceOver Links to an external site. (Macs), JAWS Links to an external site., or NVDA Links to an external site.. There is no screen reader support for Canvas in Chrome.
Basic Computer Functions
You might think that you need to be skilled in computers to be a successful online learner. This is not true. Many online learners have basic skills and technology knowledge. The following are some basic skills to be successful in an online course:
- Know how to use a keyboard to type
- Know how to navigate using a mouse
- Know how to save files
- Know how to download documents
- Know how to email
- Know how to use a word processor
- Know how to connect a camera, if not already installed
- Know how to connect speakers or headphones, if not already installed
- Know how to connect a microphone, if not already installed
- Know how to launch an internet browser
Internet Skills
You will also need to have some internet skills. You should be able to:
- Use a browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
- Perform basic searches in a search engine (Google, Bing, or Yahoo!)
