Web Conferencing in Canvas

Hello Fellow Learners,

We are about to test out a fairly new tool in the Canvas learning management system called "Big Blue Button" which is a video conferencing tool.  Some of you may have used this tool in other classes, or maybe you have used similar tools such as Skype, Goto Meeting, or others.  For some this may be the first time and is all new.  In the business world as well as education it is fast becoming the method for "Just-in-time" communication.

To get us off to a good start using the tool please what the following YouTube video "Viewer Tutorial (BigBlueButton 0.81)" before proceeding:

Now that you are somewhat familiar with how the tool should operate here is what I hope to accomplish for tomorrow:

  • All students will meet in the online conference session virtual room at 2:35 sharp! We will have a roll call then.
  • If you have a laptop computer or tablet that has a Web Cam and Microphone that is connected to the web wirelessly you may choose to locate in another room other than HUMAN 173A (the honors room). If you a in another part of the school make sure you have a strong wireless connection.  If for some reason you are not able to get into the conference session with your computer, or tablet, it will be necessary for you to come to the regular classroom to be counted as attending.
  • After roll call I will make a presentation and allow opportunity for discussion.

The goal of this session of the class is to:

  1. Test the technology for ease of use and dependability.
  2. Field comments on your personal experience (good or bad) in using the tool.
  3. Determine what improvement can be made to make the experience better.
  4. Answer the question: "What do you see as the best use for this type of tool now and for the future."

You can post your comments on the discussion board after the session.

See you tomorrow (November 20th) in the Conference Room 2:35pm sharp!
