Iliad, Book 9

The second thing you should do to be ready for Monday's class is to read a short selection from the Iliad.

The Iliad is an ancient story about the war at Troy. Greek armies have been battling Trojans for nine years when the Iliad begins. Achilles, the greatest Greek warrior has been disrespected and is unwilling to fight any longer. Without Achilles, the Greeks have little chance of winning the war.

The selection I have included is from book 9. Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek armies is sending several men to visit Achilles and to ask him to return to battle. They are offering gifts and will meet Achilles on his ship and share a meal with him. If needed, you can read a more in-depth summary of the book using Sparknotes or some other website. However, even if you do this, be sure to read the five pages linked below. Pay special attention to the wording of this epic poem, which was told orally for decades or even centuries before it was ever written down.

Once you have written your fairy tale and have done the reading, you are ready for class (at least for Allred's part of class). There will be one more assignment that will happen after class.
