Concert Critique Guidelines

This concert critique requires that you see one professional or college level dance concert of your choice (modern, ballet, jazz, etc.)  Your paper should reflect your thoughts and impression through constructive criticism.  Constructive criticism means: criticism or advice that is useful and intended to help or improve something, often offering possible solutions.  Do NOT use words like “it was good” or “it was bad”. Use words that create meaning. “It was good because....” “I didn’t like it because....” Explain your answers in detail.  This paper is worth 100pts. 2 points extra credit for handing in the ticket stub or concert program with your name on it.

Breakdown of what is expected in your critical analysis paper  (75pts)

The following is what the bulk or your critical analysis paper will include:

○      Introduction (who, what, when, where, time, etc.) 15pts

○      Describe (create an image for the reader) 15pts

○      Analyze (explain performance, feelings, ideas) 15pts

○      Interpret (what do you think the meaning and/or intent of the choreography is?) 15pts

○      Judge (was the choreographer successful in communicating his point of view, why? or why not?) 15pts

Format (25pts)

○      Paper will be 3 full pages in length 15pts

○      MLA format, typed double-spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman 5pts

○      No significant errors in grammar, spelling, or punctuation 5pts
