PHILOSOPHY PAPER GUIDELINES

This paper is meant to reflect your personal philosophy concerning dance. It should be based on experience, readings, and reflection of: what dance is in general; it's purpose and impact in our culture; and more specifically how dance personally impacts your life. Use the readings and class notes to guide your writing.  Define topics or areas you would like to address and give yourself enough reflective time to analyze what you think, know, and feel about them. This paper should be in MLA format, typed, double spaced, and one-two pages in length.

Submit here on Canvas NO LATER THAN MONDAY DECEMBER 12th, THE LAST DAY OF CLASS.

Begin your paper with an introductory paragraph which defines dance and introduces the reader  to an overview of your personal perspective of this art form.  Introduce the reader t the various perspectives/topics that you will address in the body of the paper. The body of the paper should flesh out these areas in an articulate and descriptive way.  You may consider addressing any of the following topics in your paper or any others that reflect you personal point of view.  End paper with a substantial paragraph which summarizes and restates your philosophy with greater clarity.

The following topics are suggestions to consider. They are not required and not a complete list by any means.  Use them to fertilize thought.

  1. Identify and analyze the impact dance has on you in terms of your human qualities.
  2. Why do people dance and why do you dance?
  3. How is dance woven into your life? Should it be part of a dancers life or should it be woven into their life?
  4. How does dance define us? How does dance define a culture, a place, or a time?
  5. What does dance mean to culture, place, or time?
  6. What educational merit does dance have?
  7. What physical, intellectual, social, emotional, psychological, and spiritual benefits are derived through dance.
  8. What is the relationship between the audience and the dance or dancer?
  9. What makes dance an art form?
  10. Are all dance genres considered dance as art?
  11. What is art?
