Advanced Nursing Care of the Adult Clinical

Course Description

This course expands on the learning processes of medical-surgical concepts through clinical application. Students will provide care in a variety of health care settings, functioning as part of a health care team to provide nursing care within the scope of practice as mandated by the Utah State Board of Nursing..Failure to successfully complete this course will necessitate a repeat of the course prior to advancement in the nursing program.

  1. The instructional setting will be hospital/clinic.
  2. This course will be taught face to face as well as assignment instruction. The course concentrates on problem-based learning focused on clinical problems and professional issues in preparation for regular nursing practice (Keating and DeBoor, 2018).
  3. Participants will be 2nd year associate degree nursing students in a 4-week clinical rotation at the participating hospital.

Course Goals

  • At the end of the course, students will apply basic principles from the biological and behavioral sciences to determine nursing actions for patients with disease conditions and provide nursing care of those patients.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will safely implement the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, interventions, and evaluation.
  • Students will participate as a responsible and accountable member of a healthcare team, collaborating and coordinating care for patients utilizing communication skills to enhance safe, ethical, and legal patient care.

 Course Outcomes

1.     Apply the basic principles from both the biological and behavioral sciences as well as nursing theory to determine the correct nursing actions for patients and their families in the hospital setting.

2.        Participate as a member of the nursing team assigned and complete assessments.  This will include planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.  Assist patients in meeting their functional needs.

3.      Safely implement evidenced-based psychomotor skills within the registered nurse scope of practice. 

4.       Utilize effective communication skills with health care team and patients.

5.      Demonstrate ability to provide health education for patients, families, and peers.

6.      Display responsibility and accountability for oneself when performing nursing care utilizing ethical and legal principles as appropriate

Students must have an 80% average in this course to pass the course and continue in the Nursing Program. (Refer to School of Nursing Student Handbook).  To receive a grade, all course requirements must be met.

 

Course Format:

Unit 1          Role and Function of the Registered Nurse

Unit 2          Creative/Critical Thinking

Unit 3          Patient Teaching and Time Management

Unit 4          Focused patient assessment and skills review

Clinical Attire, Behavior, and Attendance

Clinical attire, grooming, behavior, and attitude must comply with the expectations outlined in the College Nursing Student Handbook. Uniforms are to be official, clean, and wrinkle-free; identification badges must be worn at all times. Failure to do so will result in a student being dismissed from clinical until the required badges are obtained. Students are expected to arrive at clinical rotations on time and unimpaired by fatigue, illness, alcohol, or drugs. Sleeping while at any clinical experience may result in dismissal from the clinical site. Students must attend all clinical experiences. In case of unavoidable absence on the assigned day, the instructor must be notified personally prior to the scheduled arrival time; students who fail to arrive in a timely manner will be subject to disciplinary actions as detailed in the College Nursing Student Handbook. Absences from clinical will be cause for faculty review with possible failure for the semester and/or program dismissal. Failure to complete ALL clinical hours results in failure of the course.
