Self-Evaluation Paper:
Self-Evaluation/Developmental Theories Application Paper
This paper is typewritten and should be at least three full pages in length, double-spaced. No citations or bibliography is necessary unless you use a direct quote from the book or online resource.
The idea is to have you examine a certain event or stage of your life (i.e. crisis) using the theories discussed in Chapter 1 of your text. For example, maybe you pick the stage of adolescence because it pretty much sucked for you, or maybe you pick when you moved from New York to Utah.
Once you have picked the stage or event you want to examine, explain why that event or stage had such an impact on you using the theories as a means of doing this analysis. In other words you get to be your own shrink for three to four pages.
For an exceptional paper, follow the steps below:
1. A detailed summary of the event or the stage of life. This should be around 1 page.
2. Choose a primary developmental theorist (Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Watson, Bandura, Maslow) and give a brief explanation about his/her ENTIRE theory, not just the part that pertains to your crisis (1-2 paragraphs).
3. Now, specifically APPLY the theory to YOU. For example, if you chose to talk about how you were affected when your grandma died when you were 7, and you chose Piaget, you would explain how children at this time are logical thinkers and their thinking is limited to what they can see, hear, and touch (concrete operational). How did you feel at this time and, from what you know from your developmental theories, why? Expand on the consequences of your limitations due to the stage of life you were in. Steps 3 will be about 2-3 paragraphs collectively.
4. Ecological Systems Theory: Write a minimum of one paragraph about how your respective environment impacted you during your crisis: school, church, family, culture, socio economic status, peers, etc.
5. Reflective conclusion—what have you learned? Briefly restate your event or stage. Next, restate what you learned by evaluating the crisis and applying the knowledge you’ve learned from a specific developmental theory. Last, tell me how this knowledge might change your perspective, or possibly help a future generation handle a similar crisis in their future.
